Engagement Party Invitations
The
guests who are invited to the engagement party should also ultimately be
invited to the wedding, so it will be important to include the bride and groom
in the planning process. There are, of
course, exceptions to this rule. If the
couple will be having a small, family only wedding or a destination wedding to
which not everyone will be invited, you can still throw a large extravagant
engagement bash. You'll just have to
get creative in letting guests know they may or may not be invited to the
wedding itself in order to avoid any confusion or hurt feelings.
The
engagement party
invitations should let guests know what type of event the party will
be. While the invitations can be fun and
frivolous, they should never upstage the actual wedding invitations. A nice touch is to set the engagement party
apart from the wedding by creating a totally unique experience or theme (again,
as a way to avoid upstaging the actual event).
If you know your friend the bride is planning a casual beachside
wedding, why not host a dressy cocktail party indoors as a contrast? Hosting an
all-out theme or costume party is another great way to make guests feel
comfortable while avoiding upstaging the main event.

When should engagement party invitations be sent?
How
soon you want to send invitations will depend on the type of event. If it's a fairly casual or cocktail party,
two to three weeks in advance is generally appropriate. If you need a final
headcount for catering or reservations, you may need to send the invitations
sooner in order to get the responses you need.
